THE IMPLEMENTATION OF WATER PURIFICATION USING SIMPLE TOOLS

Abstract
Often there is rain causing a lot of water to overflow and mix with community well water, which provides murky
well water. This study aims to describe how to clear water using a simple tool. To process raw water to be clean
in the countryside requires a simple water filter. The people of Rokan Hulu consume water from dug wells. The
condition of the well water is murky and easily polluted with surface water around it there are many ponds,
sewers, small reservoirs, and rivers. People need to be given knowledge about clean water and how to process it.
PGSD STKIP Rokania students practice clearing water using simple tools. The benefits of this research are
expected as input in community efforts in clearing water.

INTRODUCTION
Water is an essential compound for all forms of life on Earth. Water is an important and
inseparable part of the life of all living things. The human body itself is made up of 60-70% water
(Sari, 2014). Therefore, it is important for everyone to have enough water intake every day to
replace the lost water.
Water is also a variety of other needs in everyday life, for example, to process food, wash
dishes and dirty clothes, and clean themselves (Setiawati, Musthofa, & Daud, 2021). Although
water appears to be clear and odorless, it is scientifically composed of several compounds (Ariqoh,
2017).
Clean water is safe water (Healthy) and good to drink, colorless, odorless, with a fresh taste
(Triono, 2018). The most important water requirement for humans is drinking water. But clean
water is not only as explained earlier, but clean water must also meet health requirements. These
health requirements include, among others, do not contain toxic chemicals or bacterial germs that
can interfere with health.
Dirty water is one that does not meet the health requirements for drinking, cooking, bathing,
and energy needs (Febrina & Ayuna, 2015). Dirty water is wastewater from the remaining
production of human activities (Imamuddin & Mochammad, 2019). Water can be said to be dirty
if it has smelly features, is cloudy, and tastes if drunk (Sahabuddin, 2012).
In general, there are several sources of water that we can use directly or through simple
treatment, namely PDAM water, rainwater, springs, groundwater, and surface water (Adi, 2018).
Surface water such as river water, swamp water, lake water, irrigation water, seawater, and so on

is a source of water that can be used as clean water and drinking water but needs treatment. Surface
water is very easily contaminated and polluted by impurities and pollutants that float, float, settle
and constrict in surface water. Because of its nature, before drinking surface water needs to be
treated first until it is completely safe and qualifies as clean water or drinking water.
There are several simple ways to process dirty water into the water so it is suitable for
consumption, and the most commonly used way is to make a water filter (Susanto & Kalsum,
2014). It should be noted that simple water filtration cannot completely clear the water (Ristiyanto,
2020). Because the treatment of dirty water into clean water must be done carefully so that the
germs that exist in the water are completely no longer there.
Based on the description above the author titled this study with "Water purification using a
simple tool. "The formula of the problem in this study is how to make dirty water purification tools
into clean water using simple tools that do not require much capital. The purpose of this study is
to create a tool that can be used to clean up dirty water simply.
METHOD
A simple water purifier is a simple tool made to filter dirty water to make it cleaner so that it
is easier to function. The material can be gravel, sand, cotton, banana pellets, foliage, etc. Its
function is to clean the dirt with some processes that are passed.
Filtration is a method of separating chemicals based on differences in speed or ease of
evaporating (volatility) of materials (Nurcahyo & Prabandari, 2016). In life, the need for clean
water is a sure thing for the survival of our lives.
In general, the purpose of water purification is to eliminate or reduce the levels of pollutants
present in it in order to be suitable for eventual use. One such use is to restore to the natural
environment the water that is already in use without causing adverse effects to the environment.
Specifically, the purposes of water purification are to reduce turbidity; reduce smell, taste, and
color; reduce and kill microorganisms; reduce the levels of materials dissolved in water; reduce
hardness; and improve the degree of acidity (pH).
The tools and materials used by researchers in this dirty water purification are botol Aqua,
cutter, scissors, charcoal, micro sand, large and small pebbles, glasses/water container, tissue,
gauze, and dirty water.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The implementation of Simple Clean Water Filtering practices for pgsd students was held on
November 20, 2021, at Rokania College of Teacher Training and Education Campus, Langkitin
Village, Rambah Samo Subdistrict, Rokan Hulu Regency. Water filtration practice activities begin
with directions from lecturers who are welcome to start the implementation of filtering practices
using simple tools. Then continue with the practice to make used bottles as a filter of clean water.
The materials used in this practice are murky water, fine sand, gravel, charcoal, ijuk, coral, gauze,
and tissues. Also carried out the practice of filtering simple water using cotton fabric material.
The method of making a simple water filter tool is:

1) Plastic bottles of mineral water measuring 1,500 ml, used as water filtration containers.
Fine sand, as a second level water filter of gravel, as a third water filter. Charcoal, as the
fourth water filter. Ijuk is the fourth water filter. Coral, as the fifth filter, and gauze plus
tissue, as the last or bottom water filter. The reservoir is useful to hold filter water, the
reservoir can use the results of used bottle pieces or other tools;
2) To make sure the ingredients used are completely clean, wash all the ingredients to be used,
then dry them. Take a plastic bottle of used mineral water measuring 1,500 ml or size of
1.5 liters. Cut the base using scissors or cutters. Open the bottle cap, then place the water
bottle in the reservoir, upside-down hold the mineral water bottle so that it does not collapse
when filling the water filter materials;
3) Arrange the necessary materials in the order that is at the top is fine sand, gravel, charcoal,
ijuk, coral, gauze, and tissues. Place the reservoir under the bottle to hold the filtered water.
Pour the murky water slowly through the filter bottle. Continuously, pour the dirty water
until the water that is accommodated turns clearer. If the filter results are still less clean do
the filtering once again to get really clean water;
4) After filtering the water using a simple tool the next task is to make an observation report.
One part of the observation contains the results of observations and conclusions. The
results of water purification can be seen through the previous image. Where the water that
was originally murky color turns clearer. This is because the materials used, such as fine
sand, gravel, charcoal, ijuk, coral, gauze, and tissues help in clearing the water; and
5) The pebble serves as a filter material and helps oxygen aeration. Fine sand serves to
withstand mud deposits. Charcoal serves as an absorber of fine particles, absorbing odors
and colors found in water. Ijuk serves to filter particles that escaped from the previous layer
and flattened the flowing water. Coral serves to filter large materials and dirt filters.
CONCLUSION
For students majoring in PGSD, it was held on 20 November 2021 at Rokania College of
Teacher Training and Education Campus, Langkitin Village, Rambah Samo District, Rokan Hulu
Regency. running smoothly and practiced with great enthusiasm by students. From the practice of
making water purification tools, it is obtained that the water that was originally cloudy after the
practice of filtering water turned more clear and odorless. This is because the materials used, such
as fine sand, gravel, charcoal, ijuk, coral, gauze, and tissues help the process of purifying water.
