Abstract

Food security requires sustainable animal protein sources, such as tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a fast-growing, economically valuable, and adaptable fish suitable for floating net cage (KJA) systems. However, high feed costs, particularly for protein, remain a major constraint. This research aims to examine the effect of variation in feed protein levels (28% and 34%) and Cr-yeast supplementation on the growth performance and biochemical profile of tilapia blood in KJA. The parameters observed included survival rate (SR), absolute weight growth, daily growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency, protein retention, fat retention, as well as blood biochemical indicators (blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL, and LDL). The results showed that low-protein feed (28%) was still able to support the survival rate, growth, and feed efficiency, which were comparable to those of high-protein feed (34%). The addition of Cr-yeast to 28% feed has been proven to increase the efficiency of energy metabolism through the protein-sparing effect mechanism—a condition in which energy needs are met primarily by lipids so that proteins can be directed to tissue formation. Furthermore, Cr-yeast stabilizes glucose, lowers cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL, and raises HDL, resulting in a more balanced lipid profile. This study confirms that low-protein feed (28%) enriched with Cr-yeast offers an efficient and economical alternative, supporting tilapia growth in KJA systems, enhancing aquaculture production, and contributing to national food security through sustainable animal protein provision.
